Fascinating lot of World War II personal correspondence from across Europe and the U.S. between a Private First Class Edwin Gibson (of the 83rd Airdrome Squadron stationed in Germany), a Chaplain First Lieutenant Arthur Gibson (with the 424th Field Artillery Group, stationed in Arkansas) and their mother Nellie Gibson in Baltimore. Lot contains 25 letters sent from within the U.S., France and Germany with dates ranging from 1937-1945; 16 letters are from Edwin Gibson, five are from Arthur Gibson and four are from their mother. The letters paint a vivid picture of the soldiers missing home, particularly the elation and anxiety of the last month of the war in Europe. Private First Class Edwin Gibson writes from Germany, 8 May 1945, ''Honestly, I'm so glad of this wonderful news that I don't know what to say. As you know by this time and perhaps sooner, it's 'Over.' Gosh! There are so many things I'd like to tell you that, Gosh! I'd just love to see you...I've been through a war with out a scratch...You know, Mother, the morning of which the Germans surrendered which was May 7th, 2:41 AM, that very morning I was guarding the entrance to the field...'' 20 May 1945, ''We are really knocking the hell out of them. How about that? I trust their souls all rest in hell. I hate their blood! So much for that! Hows the weather there in Balto?'' 1 June 1945 ''This picture was taken outside of Nurmberg, where I am. I don't like it here at all.'' Also included in lot: A Western Union telegram to Baltimore dated 28 August 1938; a postcard of Rodin's Victor Hugo bust from Petit Palais, Paris; three 1940's US Air mail unused envelopes; an undated V-mail notifying termination of address and various newspaper clippings and leaflets enclosed with the letters. Minor soiling and creasing to letters and envelopes. Overall very good.
