8pp. letter from Charles S. Ramsay of the 44th Ohio Infantry Band. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''Camp Piatt Nov 9th, 1861,'' letter reads in part: ''...I echo the sentiment 'Oh, that the war was over.' How many hearts that are now filled with sorrow would then be filled with joy? I look forward to the time when I shall be allowed to clasp my arms once more round my love...how I did pity the poor guards that had to be out in the rain all night and those companies that left here last Sabbath...the last word we had from them they had joined Benham's Brigade and was expecting to attack the enemy. they had Floyd surrounded by four divisions (our boys were in the lower division) and they were closing in on him gradually and his only chance for escape was by cutting his way through one of the divisions. Rosecrans felt pretty sure of capturing him. wouldn't that be good news...The Regiment have nearly all come to the conclusion that Lieut. Col. Wilson is somewhat scared. it may be only the responsibility he feels is resting upon him that causes him to act as he does. the other evening we were sitting in our tents relating anecdotes and laughing (as we had done almost every evening before he came and of which Col. Woods took no notice) when Col. Wilson came up and requested us to make less noise. He thought that he heard the Pickets on the top of the hill calling for aid! It is generally supposed that if a picket wanted aid that he would fire his gun...'' The 44th Ohio Infantry saw its most significant action in the rout of Confederate forces at Dutton's Hill, Kentucky. Charles S. Ramsay mustered in on 8 October 1861 and mustered out on 8 October 1862 at Covington, Kentucky. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
