Letter to Captain Jasper S. Ross of the 42nd Ohio Infantry. Accompanied by cover. Written in ink and datelined ''Malvern Ja 6-64,'' Captain Ross's younger brother writes to him with news from home: ''...The snow is about 4 inches deep now and a sleigh runs tolerably well...Preacher Way was at our house to day. He was trying to sell Pop a piano...Pop thinks he will get one but not just now. Aunt Nancy was at our house to day. She looks very bad since Marions death. Mr.Vanhorn and his wife were also here to day. John Graham and his wife and babies were here on Sunday last. He is going to move on the old Sidon for in the spring...Billy Hillerman has volunteered and the 3rd Ohio Battery is now at Vicksburgh. He got $300.00 from the County and $402 from the Government. School is progressing very well...I guess I have written almost all the news all at least that I can think of. So I guess I will close wishing you good night...'' The 42nd Ohio Infantry saw action at Middle Creek, Vicksburg, Fort Hindman and Champion's Hill. Jasper Ross was commissioned into Field and Staff of the 42nd on 27 November 1861 as First Lieutenant, and promoted as high as Captain before being discharged. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 3pp. Mild foxing throughout and chipping at top edge, otherwise near fine condition.
