Autograph poem signed by American poet Samuel Smith, dated 2 January 1895. Here, Smith hand-writes the first stanza of his famous patriotic poem-turned-song, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" which he originally entitled "America." Reads in full: "America / My country 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing. Land where my father died, Land of the Pilgrim's pride, From every mountain side, let freedom ring." Signed "S.F. Smith / Written in 1832 / January 2nd 1895". Dated the same year he died. Poem measures 5" x 8" on 1pp. Toning, more so on the right hand side, with a chip to the upper right corner and a small hole to the upper left corner. Small separation at fold has been archivally repaired. Very good condition.
