Andrew Johnson autograph quote signed from his incendiary 2 March 1861 Senate speech. Quote reads in full, '''Show me the man who makes war on the Government and fires on its vessels, and I'll show you a traitor. If I were President of the United States, I would have all such arrested, and when tried and convicted, by the Eternal God I would hang them.' / Andrew Johnson / U.S. Senator / March 2 1861.'' He also signs ''Andrew Johnson'' on the verso of the card, measuring 3.25'' x 2''. When he delivered this impassioned speech in the Senate just days before Lincoln's inauguration, the Senate chair cleared the galleries and warned Johnson he was liable to be arrested, to which Johnson responded, ''arrest and be damned.'' Of course, once Johnson had the opportunity to execute traitors seven years later as President overseeing Reconstruction, he pardoned them. A fascinating item from the most tumultuous time in American history. Toning, else fine.
