Photo of Group 1 and Group 2 NASA astronauts with mat signed by each of them, including the late Neil Armstrong. Together the two groups, the Mercury Seven and the New Nine comprise 16 astronauts. Group 1 was chosen from a pool of military test pilots for the orbital-focused Project Mercury, though many additionally flew on subsequent missions. Group 2 were also test pilots but with even further engineering training to benefit them in the complex rendezvous and docking maneuvers of the Gemini and Apollo programs. Signers are ''Neil Armstrong'', ''John Glenn Jr.'', ''Wally Schirra'', ''Scott Carpenter'', ''Gus Grissom'', ''Alan B. Shepard'', ''Gordon Cooper'', ''James Lovell'', ''John Young'', ''Deke Slayton'', ''Edward H. White II'', ''James A. McDivitt'', ''Elliot See'', ''Charles Conrad'', ''Frank Borman'' and ''Thomas P. Stafford''. An inscription by Slayton at the top of the photo reads: ''To Marty with highest personal regards and gratitude for your outstanding accomplishments in supporting our efforts.''
