Winston Churchill signed edition of "Marlborough: His Life and Times" published by George Harrap & Co. Ltd.: London: 1933. On the brink of World War, Churchill pens the front free endpaper: "Inscribed by / Winston Churchill / August 1941". Here, Churchill acts as biographer of his ancestor John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough. The riveting biography is in four volumes, of which three are present in this lot; Volumes I, II, and III. Volume I is from a later printing in 1939. Volume II is a first edition, second printing from October 1934. The third tome is a first edition, first printing from 1936. Each is bound in purple cloth boards with gilt lettering, measuring 6.75" x 9.5". Original dustjackets accompany; Vol. II wears a Vol. IV dustjacket. Dustjackets III and IV are in good to very good condition; Vol. I dustjacket has significant paper loss to backstrip; fair. Light foxing and toning to leaves and sunning to backstrips. Paper loss to front free endpaper of Vol. I. Partial set is in good to very good condition overall.
