17th century broadside proclamation issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England postponing Parliament. King Charles I cancelled Parliament for 11 years straight, contributing largely to his dethronement. By the time of this proclamation, 6 September 1694, the law required the monarch to hold a session at least once every three years. Broadside reads in part: ''...this present Parliament stands Prorogued to the Eighteenth Day of...September, We...Declare...That the same Parliament shall...be further prorogued unto the five and twentieth Day of October next...'' Printed by Charles Bill, and the executrix of Thomas Newcomb. William and Mary came to power and ruled as co-regent Anglicans after Mary's Catholic father James was deposed. Queen Mary would die of smallpox three months after this broadside was printed. Distribution of broadsides on the streets was the most efficient means of royal communication with the public at the time. Measures 9.25'' x 12.25''. Mounted to paper to an overall size of 11.5'' x 18.5''. Foxing, toning, and slightly irregularly trimmed edges. Very good.
