John Muir signed first edition of his book, ''My First Summer in the Sierra''. Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1911. Muir autographs the front free endpaper, ''To Mary L. Hutchinson with congratulations & all good wishes / John Muir''. Muir then adds the dateline, ''Martinez California September 1913''. Adapted from his own journals, Muir's book describes a three-month journey in 1869 when he supervised a flock of sheep, with vivid descriptions of the area including Yosemite and Mt. Hoffman. Book measures 5.75'' x 8.25'' and runs 354pp., with several tissued photographs throughout. Bound in original green and gilt boards, rebacked with original spine laid down. Brochure regarding Muir bound into front, and photo of him pasted onto dedication page where previous ownership signatures appear. Light wear including rubbing to gilt. Overall an attractive copy in very good condition. Accompanied by a letter describing the relationship between Muir and the original recipient of the book.
