Historically significant letter signed by James Monroe as Secretary of State, during the War of 1812. Datelined ''Department of State / Sept. 14, 1812'' Monroe writes to a B. Jones, the liaison to purchase a present for Tripoli, in an effort to appease the country with whom America had a tense alliance. In the Treaty of Tripoli, which has incidentally been re-studied for its language regarding America as a Christian nation, the United States was to make payments to Tripoli in exchange for protection of its ships in the Mediterranean. These payments, however, grew larger and more aggressive, ultimately leading to the Second Barbary War in 1815.

Letter reads in full, ''Sir, your letters of the 27 ult and 9th inst have been duly received. With respect to the Consular present for Tripoli, it is thought, on every account to be advisable to purchase it in Europe, either at Cadiz or some port in Italy. The danger of capture, if sent from this country and the comparatively low price at which every article composing the present, is to be had in Europe, are considerations which conclusively recommend this course. With your general instructions, will be sent as soon as other pressing engagements will permit, a list of the articles, which have on former occasions, been found to be most acceptable at Tripoli. To these will be added the bond required by law for the faithful performance of the consular duties. / I have the honor to be respectfully, Sir, your ob. svt.'' Then very boldly signed by the Secretary of State, ''Jas Monroe''. Single page letter measures 7.75'' x 9.75''. Somewhat brittle paper, leading to chipping on margins, with no significant loss of content. Some discoloration and toning and a 1.25'' separation along one fold. Overall in good condition with very bold signature.
