J.K. Rowling autograph letter signed, dated 14 December 1998 shortly after publication of the second Harry Potter novel, ''Chamber of Secrets''. Written to Brenda, the mother of Rowling's ex-boyfriend Michael, whom she was dating while writing ''Philosopher's Stone'', affectionate letter reads in full:
''Dear Brenda, / This is a long overdue reply to your letter about Harry, which meant a great deal to me. Thanks so much for taking the trouble to write & for all the kind things you said about the books. Mike tells me he's bought a copy of the first one ('as you're obviously not going to send me one') but, not altogether to my surprise, he hasn't read it. I'm thinking of pretending there's a character based on him in the next one, just to fool him into ploughing through it. I trust I can count on your support in this matter.
Jessica & I are staying in Edinburgh this Christmas, but friends are coming to stay too. I'm really looking forward to it, it's been a very hectic time of late. I hear you're off to France; give Pam, Jacques & Nicolas my love & tell them Harry Potter et l'Ecole des Sorciers is very reasonably priced (but perhaps still a little old for Nicolas?)
It was lovely to hear from you and I hope all goes well in Wales. If I'm down that way next year (not impossible, because I'm touring, you see), perhaps we could 'do' lunch?
Anyway, hope '99 is a good one for all of you and thanks again for getting in touch - / lots of love / Jo''.
Two page letter on a single sheet measures 8.25'' x 11.625'', written in blue ballpoint. Folds, else near fine.
