Invitation to the ceremony for the reading and signing of the Israeli Declaration of Independence on 14 May 1948, printed and dated the day prior, 13 May. Only 250 individuals attended this private ceremony at the Tel Aviv Museum (now Independence Hall), kept secret for fear of interruption by the British authorities or Arab militants. At the ceremony, David Ben-Gurion - Israel's first Prime Minister, read the newfound Declaration of Independence and then signed it along with other Israeli leaders.
Invitation in Hebrew translates in part, "Dear Sir, we hereby have the honor of sending you an invitation to the Gathering for the Declaration of Independence which will take place on Friday, 5th Iyar 1948, at 4:00 PM in the museum hall…We request you keep secret the content of this invitation and the time of assembly of the council…Dress: Dark suit". Single page on bifolium measures 5.5" x 8.5" as folded. Single fold and light edgewear, overall near fine. Accompanied by original envelope, with two hole punches at side. From the estate of a journalist who attended the event.
