Dated 14 January 1967, Thompson writes to his childhood friend Paul Semonin, ''Punko / What now? Are you still on good terms with Le Roi? Black Flag! Put Whitey to sleep with a flit gun. And get his wallet, too. Your wallet. / I'm making progress toward getting the long overdue money from Penguin...R.H. [Random House] is still coy about paying my way. They're waiting to see how the book is received. Feb 17 is now the definite date & they're paying my way to SF & LA then. I'll get to NY even if I have to pay my own ticket. I'm in a terrible agent snarl again. I have to come there & cut all the Gordian knots. / As for here, it's the same kind of good-life dullness - maddening stupor, but I'll take it any day to life on the West Side. The answer is mobility - this is a nice gig to come back to...H''. Two page letter on two sheets measures 8.5'' x 11''. Folds, and light wear, else near fine condition.
