Harry Houdini typed letter signed, referencing his book, ''A Magician Among the Spirits''. Dated 16 May 1924 on his personal stationery, letter reads in part, ''My dear Birren: - Mailing you my book 'A Magician Among the Spirits' with my compliments. I was unable to use the cuts in the book, as they eliminated 100,000. words. Am rushing this away to you, as I want to look the book over whilst we are both alive...'' Signed by Houdini in black fountain pen. The book that Houdini references is lot 164 in this auction.
Faber Birren was a friend of Houdini's who worked at a bookstore selling Houdini's books. Birren would also be dispatched by Houdini to investigate local psychics and spiritualists and then report back to Houdini with his opinion of them. He would later become one of the most influential color theorists of the 20th century. Single page letter measures 8.5'' x 5.5''. Folds, light toning, small hole at top, chip to upper left corner and hole punched at right. Very good condition. Consigned by the family of Faber Birren.
