Harper Lee signed "To Kill A Mockingbird", J.B. Lippincott: Philadelphia & New York: 1960. The acclaimed author inscribes: "Happy Birthday to / Alice Byron / - Harper Lee / January 16, 2002" to the front free endpaper in black ink. This first edition, second printing comes encased in its original unclipped dustjacket with "Second Printing" label printed to front flap. Lee's semi-autobiographical novel about a 10 year -old girl growing up in the 1930's American South won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and its popularity has endured. Widely taught in schools as a classic of American literature, its themes range from race, class, and gender to law and morality. In the wake of the book's success, Lee shied away from the public eye, declining interviews and public appearances. Runs 296pp. Bound in brown paper boards with a green cloth spine titled with brown lettering. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". Very slight cocking to spine and minor wear to spine ends. Near fine. Creasing and surface loss to edges and hinges of dustjacket with a vertical line of wear near the spine. Very good. A cornerstone of American literature signed by its reluctantly famous author.
