George Washington autograph letter signed, penned on 20 July 1798 from Mount Vernon to inventory Oliver Evans, who invented the first automated milling system. Washington first learned of Evans' system in 1790 and signed his patent application as President. He was very impressed with the system - said to do the work of seven men - and converted his gristmill at Mount Vernon to the Evans system. Washington writes Evans regarding a miller, in full:

''Sir, Finding more difficulty than I apprehended in getting a Miller from Northward, I have again engaged my present one, on the terms he was before, rather than delay the matter any longer. I make this communication to prevent further inquiries on your part, on my behalf; and that I may thank you for the trouble you have taken in this affair to procure one for me. I am - Sir / Your Very H'ble Srerv't / Go: Washington / Mr. Oliver Evans.''

Single page measures 6.75'' x 8.875''. Bifolium document is affixed along left edge to board. Folds, toning and light chipping, overall in very good condition.
