Franklin D. Roosevelt typed letter signed ''FDR'', dated 31 July 1928 regarding the educational needs of children being treated at Warm Springs. Composed on Roosevelt's custom business stationery, he writes to his physical therapist Helena Mahoney, ''Thank you for the check from Mrs. Carpenter for my mother's cottage. / In regard to the teacher for the smaller children, it seems to me that it is all right to give her room and board provided the Foundation gets the equivalent back again in the form of tuition fees. The actual cost of room and board comes, as I remember it, to about $2.10 a day (including of course, no overhead) and therefore we ought to get an income of about $65.00 a month to cover this. / I did nothing further about the plan to use the Village School. It seem to me that the transportation to and from the school would be too complicated. On the other hand, it might be possible to get one of the Village teachers to come up to us for two hours in the morning and an hour or two late in the afternoon, and pay her about $30.00 a month. This would be a lot cheaper than boarding and lodging a teacher of our own...[signed] FDR''. Single page letter measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. Folds with one though signature, overall near fine. Letter also has calculations on verso, perhaps done by Roosevelt.
