Rare first edition, first printing of ''A Clockwork Orange'' by Anthony Burgess. Published in 1962 by Heinemann in London. First printing dustjacket shows the 16s price and wide flaps, as called for. Both dustjacket and book are in unusually near fine condition; dustjacket's deep purple-red color is still bright and shows only the faintest chipping on the head of the spine. Black clothed book retains sharp gilt lettering and is only slightly cocked. This original first edition copy of Burgess' landmark novel concludes in its final chapter with the protagonist Alex making a moral choice to forgo violence. It is said that Burgess regretted allowing the American edition to omit the last chapter and considered the movie by Stanley Kubrick ''deeply flawed'' for its omission. This original true English first edition retains the 21st chapter as Burgess intended. A near fine copy of an important 20th century novel.
