Ernest Hemingway archive of documents and a candid photo, providing proof of worker's compensation insurance for ''Finca La Vigia'', Hemingway's Cuban home, and his boat ''Pilar''. Seven pages dated 26 August 1960 include a letter from G.F. Kohly, the insurance agent in Havana, a signed original and a signed copy of the insurance certificate, the receipt of payment for that year's premium, stamped ''cancelado'', and an original plus two file copies of a ''Payroll Report'', outlining which employees of Hemingway's would be covered under this policy, as well as the salaries and bonuses for his employees, including the captain of ''Pilar''. Written by ''The Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Company Limited, Liverpool England'', the policy ran from 1 August 1960 until 1 August 1961, by which time Hemingway had died. Items are from the personal property of Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, Hemingway's friend and personal secretary, whom Hemingway met in 1942, when Herrera became a crewmember aboard ''Pilar'', at the height of World War II when Hemingway patrolled the Gulf Stream for German submarines for the U.S. government. After Hemingway's death in 1961, Herrera was appointed to represent his affairs in Cuba, including the deeding of the property and contents of ''Il Finca Vigia'' to the Cuban people ''as a place of opportunity for wider education and research, to be maintained in his memory.'' The property became a museum, and Herrera acted as its Conservator until his death in 1970. The candid photo is of two men on the veranda of Hemingway's Havana home, Finca La Vigia. On the left is Rene Villareal, author of the 2009 book ''Hemingway's Cuban Son - Reflections on the Writer by His Longtime Majordomo''. The man on the right may be Jose Luis Herrera Sotolongo, brother of Roberto Herrera Sotolongo. All but one of the documents measure approximately 8.5'' x 11''. Photo measures 4'' x 3''. Creasing, otherwise near fine.
