Ernest Hemingway autograph note both signed and initialed, declining a request by the nascent ''New York Review'' to publish a portion of ''To Have and Have Not''. Written at the bottom of a typed letter from Hemingway's attorney Alfred Rice dated 22 May 1958, ''Re: 'The Tradesman's Return'', Hemingway responds, ''Regret cannot give them permission. / For your information this [is] a part of To Have and Have Not. No reason to reprint it as a story and it is a sorry looking magazine. Thanks for the letter about increasing tax payments. Will do. Ernie''. Hemingway continues, ''Please write to remind me as am working like hell and do not want to forget. Best always EH. / Thanks for data on money paid and payable.'' Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Folds and light creasing, overall near fine.
