Large and dramatic photogravure plate from Edward Sheriff Curtis' ''The North American Indian'', plate 682 entitled ''Esipermi - Comanche'', of which Curtis would caption this photo, ''There were no more vigorous people among the Indians of the Plains than the Comanche...They were noted warriors and raiders, being the enemies of many tribes...One need look no farther than the accompanying portraits to discern the warrior character of these old braves.'' Sepia portrait is one of the large supplemental plates from volume nineteen of Curtis' comprehensive project to document all the native tribes of the Americas, a many-decade feat completed in 1930. This plate is one of only 36 large supplemental plates from volume XIX, focusing on the Indians of Oklahoma, the Wichita, Southern Cheyenne, Oto, Southern Comanche, and Peyote. Photogravure plate measures 17'' x 21.875'' on Van Gelder paper with deckled edges. With title, plate number, Curtis' 1927 copyright, and printer's credit (Suffolk Engraving Co. of Cambridge) on margins. Matted and framed to 26'' x 30''. Near fine condition.
