Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed to Mamie Eisenhower, on Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the British Isles letterhead, dated Wednesday, 8 June [1942]. In part, ''Darling...Everett [General Everett S. Hughes, Deputy Theater Commander] is leaving for a short visit in U.S. & is carrying this for me -- as well as a note to [son] Johnny. The only new thing is that I made my call on the King -- a very enjoyable 3/4 hour. He was alone and we had a long talk -- mostly business...This a.m. the newspapers carry the story of my nomination to 3 stars, but I've no official word yet. Probably won't hear anything until I am confirmed. It's O.K. -- because the British think it's all done -- and rank seems to mean more here than with us...Take care of yourself. I love you -- always -- Your devoted / Ike''. The accompanying envelope is addressed to ''Mrs. Eisenhower''. Minor creasing to 6'' x 8'' single sheet letter, written front and verso, else near fine. Lot includes original mailing envelope and letter from General Hughes to Mrs. Eisenhower.
