Duke of Wellington autograph letter signed, dated 8 September 1851, just one year before his death. He writes to the Lord Chancellor (Thomas Wilde, The Lord Truro), requesting a commission appointment for Frederick Mortimer Lewin. Arthur Wellesley, who received the title, ''Duke of Wellington,'' as a reward for his success against Napoleon in the Peninsular Campaign, signs, ''Wellington''. Tape residue to verso and minor soiling to 4.25'' x 7'' card style letter; small separations to folds, not affecting signature. Lot includes portrait of Wellington by noted British artist Thomas Lawrence, trimmed to 7'' x 10.5''. Minor foxing and toning, else very good.
