Clarence Darrow autograph letter signed, dated 18 September circa 1930, roughly three and a half years before the eighteenth amendment prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcohol was repealed. Upon his personal stationery, Darrow writes to Dr. Forrest R. Black, a law professor. In part, ''My Dear Black / Won't you please write a little synopsis of the various articles in your forthcoming book? I read all of them as you know, but the picture is somewhat blurred. As soon as I get it I will write the foreward. Please tell me how long you think it should be. The Nov. Vanity Fair is to publish my story on the repeal of the 18th amendment and its impossibility and what should be done. I don't see how it can help arousing discussion. I fancy the [illegible] will take it up and use it to battle the repealing. If you haven't placed your discussion and brief of the case what do you say to my reading it to Vanity Fair and seeing if they will run it in December?'' Darrow signs the one page letter, ''Sincerely, Clarence Darrow''. Measures 7.25'' 10.25''. Minor toning and creasing. Very good condition.
