Letter by Abraham Bope as a Corporal in the 61st Ohio Infantry. Cpl. Bope reports his experience in the Battle of Gettysburg to his father, datelining his letter Camp near Burlin, Maryland, 16 July 1863. Letter reads in part, ''...I am yet in the land and among the living And in pretty good health Only I am pretty well worn out for we have bin marching for thirty fore days and three hard days fiting at Gettysburgh. On the first days fiting I was not there there was one hundred of our 61 regiment was out on a Scout about 16 miles from whare the fight took plase. We got there on the second day about ten o'clock and when we got there they detailed Sixtey of our Regiment to Support a Battery. So I did not get to fire a Shot this fight and I did not like that fore when the rebels shoot at me I like to bee whare I can return the compliment. The third days fiting was Desperate harte at one Spell it was hart to tell what side was going to come out best in the forenoon it was mostely musket fiting and in the afternoon about one Oclock they opened on us with one hundred and seventy guns but we returned the Compliment with over two hundred guns. They cept it up most all afternoon but we drove them back with a very heavy loss the last report that we had here was that the rebel loss was about sixty thousand and if Gen [John] Dix and Gen [Erasmus] Kees [Keyes] had to a come to time we would have captured Lee and his hole army. Dix and Kees was to come up on the head of lee and keep from crossing the river. If they had to marched like we did they certain would to got there. We marched from twenty five to thirty five miles to gain our front and we made it in good time...Abraham Bope Co. K. 61 Regt O.V.I. at Washington DC''. Bope transferred in to the 82nd Ohio in March of 1865 and was promoted to Sergeant before mustering out that July. Accompanied by original mailing envelope.
