Famed Civil War Colonel Ulric Dahlgren signed legal indenture, dated 16 November 1861 when Dahlgren practiced law in Philadelphia, shortly before he served in the Civil War. Dahlgren is particularly known for what's been called the Dahlgren Affair, in which possible forged documents were found on his body after a failed raid to free Union prisoners in 1864; the documents instructed the prisoners to torch the city of Richmond and assassinate Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet. These documents quickly went missing and it was never determined if they were authentic or who ordered them, although many in the south believed they came from President Lincoln himself, speculation that contributed to Lincoln's assassination by John Wilkes Booth. Partly printed document measures 18.5'' x 22.5'' with three green seals at lower right, and elegantly signed ''Ulric Dahlgren'' at lower left. Small chip at right fold, else in pristine, near fine condition with no toning.
