Beautifully ornate walnut ''Necessaire de Voyage'' box, owned by beloved author Charles Dickens and taken with him on his travels. Box contains brass plate inlaid into the wood to top with Dickens' initials ''C.D.'' engraved. Box opens via brass hinge to left and contains intricately carved compartments for various personal items such as tweezers, toothbrush, penknife, razor, shaving soap, book hook and two pairs of scissors. Originally acquired from Jarndyce Antiquarian Books, the world's leading expert on Charles Dickens. A small brass plaque affixed to the front of case was added after Dickens' death by Bessie Evans, Dickens' daughter-in-law. Evans gifted it to her brother or brother-in-law, upon that person serving his country likely in the Boer War. The box was then returned to Evans who subsequently gave it to her niece or nephew. Plaque reads, ''Necessaire de Voyage of / Charles J.H. Dickens / Presented by Aunt Bessie to Your Father / Before He Left to Serve King And Country''. Box measures 8.5'' x 3'' x 3''. Light scratching throughout, else near fine.
