First U.S. edition, second printing of Charles Darwin's ''The Descent of Man'', one of the most important books on evolutionary biology, with Darwin applying his theory of natural selection to human evolution. In two volumes. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1871 with postscript present and 1871 on title pages, but without the statement of errata at the end of volume II. In publisher's reddish brown boards with black design on front and rear boards, and lettering in gilt to spine. As scandalous ''On the Origin of Species'' was to Victorian society, Darwin further shocks 19th century readers with his theories here on human mate selection, differences between races, and evolutionary ethics. It was also the first time that Darwin used the word ''evolution''. Books measure 5.25'' x 8'' and run 409pp. and 436pp. Previous owner's bookplates to pastedowns, some soiling and shelf wear to boards. Separation just starting at hinges. Good to very good condition.
