Carl Jung autograph letter signed with outstanding content in the form of dream analysis of one of Jung's mentees, Dr. Rivkah Scharf Kluger. In this letter to Scharf, Jung free-association hypothesizes about the meaning behind her dream, touching on religious symbols, transference of Scharf wanting Jung to be her father, and the importance of living in ''reality'', with things as they truly are. Composed on Jung's personal letterhead, he writes on 3 April 1946, translated from German, in full:
''Dear Doctor! / I want to say the following about your dream: / You are staying too long: This is an expression of your desire to be part of my family. However, I am guiding you out, that is, out of being a 'daughter', since 'fulfillment is the sacrifice' (or the sacrifice is fulfillment); whereas, that is to say, you will not be my real daughter (in spirit) until you stop keeping reality away through 'plots'. The little box points to the pious Jew who is supposed to teach you obedience. The device that lengthens my nose indicates intuition, i.e., the distant goal that can be reached by following one's nose. The little fish found behind all of this is the Christian symbol, the [handwritten symbol] that is being eaten during the Agape. It is the soul, or the Self, respectively, the atman ('atum' in Old High German = (German) 'Atem' (breath), the Holy Spirit), which we integrate, breathe in, and which, equally, causes us to breathe, ([crossed out:] spit spiritus vitae, meaning: through which we are alive. Living is sacrifice, i.e., each kind of fulfillment is a sacrifice, for making full, that is, completion, is always an ending and a beginning. The meaning of the rhythm of 2 months is not clear to me.''
He continues, ''The Self can only live when we live in agreement with reality. By following illusions, we distort reality and attempt to shirk it. / The fabrication of plots is flourishing right now because your position shows you how to find every possible way around it. / Could you please be so kind as to send me a postcard with Mrs. Jaffe's address. Unfortunately, I have not memorized it. / With kindest greetings, / Your devoted / C.G. Jung''.
Two-page letter on a single sheet measures 8.25'' x 11.625''. Folds, else near fine.
