Photo of British Prime Minister Arthur James Balfour, signed on photographic border and dated by him ''May 1917''. The Balfour Declaration occurred that same year when Balfour wrote a letter assuring the Jews a national home while serving as Foreign Secretary. The Declaration states, ''His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.'' Harris & Ewing photo is printed on thick paper with studio stamp, ''HARRIS & EWING / WASHINGTON, D.C.'' Measures 10'' x 12''. Very minor foxing to top edge and uniform block of toning around border, otherwise near fine condition.
