Large photo of the Japanese surrender aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, twice-signed by Admiral Chester Nimitz as he executes the Instrument of Surrender, thus ending World War II. Nimitz inscribes the photographic border, ''To John Hayter - May your father's glorious example guide you and inspire you through your life. C.W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, USN''. Nimitz also signs on the Surrender document, writing, ''C.W. Nimitz / U.S. Representative''. The recipient, John Hayter, was an Anglican Priest who survived four years in a Japanese prison camp from 1941-1945, writing a memoir about the experience titled ''Priest in Prison: Four Years of Life in Japanese-occupied Singapore''. Matte silver gelatin photo with photographic border measures 14'' x 11''. Hinged at top to mat measuring 17'' x 14.5''. Buckling along edges and minor fading to writing. Overall in very good to near fine condition.
