Oscar statue presented to Charles MacArthur for ''The Scoundrel'' at the 8th Annual Academy Awards. Trophy was bestowed on MacArthur in the category of Writing Best Story at the ceremony, held 5 March 1936 at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. MacArthur won jointly with Ben Hecht for their tale of a malicious publisher's death and search for redemption in the afterlife. Famed English stage actor and playwright Noel Coward made his first appearance on celluloid in the role of the title scoundrel Anthony Mallare. Character was loosely based on real-life publisher Horace Liveright, producer of Broadway's original ''Dracula.'' Alexander Woollcott, Julie Haydon, Stanley Ridges and Lionel Stander also starred, under the direction of MacArthur and Hecht. Statue consists of metal Oscar figure standing on a film reel, mounted to a black Belgian marble base. Inlaid to the underside is a medallion engraved, ''Academy First Award / To / Charles MacArthur / For Writing / Original Motion Picture / Story Of / 'THE SCOUNDREL'''. Trophy bears a George Stanley maker's mark behind the heels. Measures 12'' in total height. Base diameter measures 5.5''. Weighs 6 pounds, 14 ounces. Statue has been expertly repaired for a break at the ankles. Cracking to the head and film reel is also present and gold finish is worn. Overall good condition. A scarce early Oscar.
