''Ben-Hur'' screen-worn costume from the grandiose chariot race sequence. Its impressive appearance is the result of grand-scale production; MGM risked a record-breaking $15 million on its ultimately blockbusting Biblical epic in a last-ditch effort to stave off bankruptcy. The elaborate million-dollar chariot race sequence, set in a Jerusalem circus, was shot near Rome, Italy on an 18-acre lot at Cinecitta Studios. Lot comprises: (1) thick tunic in cream, with blue dots and orange-red borders, made of heavy felt or similar fabric, measuring 18'' across the chest and 31'' in length, (2) matching brief underpant with elastic sides, measuring 16'' across one side, (3) matching cloth belt, (4) lightweight toga, (5) Thracian style helmet, covered in leather and painted in metallic, with a padded leather lining, (6) pair of leather shin guards painted in the same metallic hue as the helmet, (7) pair of matching leather cuffs. Wear to leather on the helmet and some buckles and straps absent from cuffs, else lot is near fine.
