'The Afro-American'' newspaper from 18 July 1936, with sections from both Baltimore and New York. The 1936 Olympics, hosted in Berlin by Hitler, is covered with a large headline in red on the front page, ''17 ATHLETES SAIL FOR BERLIN''. A photo of high jumper Cornelius Johnson is shown, with additional coverage of the Olympics on the Sports page. Jesse Owens is mentioned in the story about the American Olympic track team, which ''consists of 66 members - ten of these have brown skins...In 4 events the dark boys shut out paleface rivals from first or second places...'' In another story, a man who gave a pro-Hitler, anti-Semitic rant on a street corner was fined $10. Newspaper runs approximately 20pp., and measures 17'' x 23.5''. Chipping to brittle pages, with some detached from spine. Overall in good condition.
