Lew Wallace signed copy of his novel ''Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ'', considered the most important Christian book of the 19th century, and the book that eclipsed ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' as the best selling novel of all time, a position it held until ''Gone With the Wind''. The author Lew Wallace, a General in the Civil War, boldly signs the dedication page, ''Very respectfully, Lew. Wallace.'' New York: Harper & Bros., likely an early printing sometime after 1887 when the Table of Contents was added, which is present here. Bound in navy boards with gilt embellishments, book measures 5'' x 7''. Private library stamp to front free endpaper, very mild dampstaining at lower edge and separation starting, mostly to bottom of rear joint. Overall an attractive copy in very good condition, with a fine signature by Wallace. With JSA COA.
