Winston Churchill typed letter signed, with his hand-annotation of ''Confidential'' at the top. Churchill writes on 18 June 1947 to Commodore Gordon Allen, part of his ''Syndicate'' who helped him write his WWII memoir, ''The Second World War'', a hugely popular series of books published from 1948-1953. This letter is the confirmation of Allen's participation in the project, with his salary and details outlined.
Upon his Hyde Park Gate stationery, Churchill writes in part, ''My dear Commodore Allen, I am very glad that you will help me in the naval aspect of my War Memoirs and that you will give me your full-time service. As I told you this work will, if I live, probably be appearing off and on in serial form from the beginning of 1948 for nearly four years. / I propose to you one year's contract at 1,000 a year. I enclose herewith the first quarterly payment...There is urgency in completing the first volume, which covers the Twilight War and my period at the Admiralty. This I hope to deliver during October next to the publishers...You should bill me from time to time for any expenses you may incur...I look forward to a fruitful work together and feel sure you will find it interesting as it develops...[signed] Winston S. Churchill''. Two page letter on two sheets measures 7.5'' x 9.5''. A few moisture spots and file holes to upper left, otherwise beautifully preserved in near fine condition.
