Famed Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman autograph letter signed on 18 July 1875 and sent to his friend Joseph Audenreid. Written from St. Louis, Missouri on U.S. Army stationery, letter reads in part, ''...Dear Audenreid / I spent yesterday in the country, and did till midnight, when I found your letter of July 15. I suppose there is no help for it. And your letter that comprises the conclusion of which Gen'l Ross had arrived. And to which Mrs. McCoy assents. McCoy by his family expenses and from [illegible] to false friends and may be gambling, got deep into debt, used public money in his hand, and did with this spent of $4000. When I was away he made a request as the Secretary of War for 3000 of the appropriation of 1874-5, leaving as you know only $2000 for the balance of the year. I spoke to him several times about the extreme impertinence of his public accounts and he seemed hurt, but being extremely ill I did not push the matter. But these accounts now required my approval, and I am in no reason accountable...'' Sherman signs ''W.T. Sherman'' to bottom of 4pp. letter written on card-style stationery. Measures 5'' x 8''. Document folds and very light toning, else near fine.
