Ulysses S. Grant document signed as President, appointing Mrs. Ellen Keiser Sanderson to the position of Postmaster in Springfield, Ohio. Sanderson's husband, Colonel John P. Sanderson gained notoriety during the Civil War for exposing a plot by the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret pro-slavery political organization. Document is dated 26 February 1875, and boldly signed ''U.S. Grant'' at lower right. Measures 17'' x 14'', with intact green seal. Some spotting, and affixed to flexible card stock. Overall very good condition. An unusual 19th century appointment, the first we've seen appointing a woman.
