Ulysses S. Grant autograph endorsement signed, penned on 11 March 1883, the same year that Grant invested his fortunes with Ferdinand Ward, the infamous Wall Street fraud. In this letter, Grant responds to another money-making ''scheme'', a gold mining venture in Zacatecas, Mexico. Grant writes on the verso of a letter he received from Matias Romero, Mexican Ambassador to the United States, who makes an introduction for his colleague Senor Perogordo; Romero writes that Perogordo ''desires me to request your to take charge if you can, of his mining scheme.'' Grant then writes, ''Will Messrs Lanesbery[?] & Haggen please see the bearer Mr. Perogordo who bears a project for the working of the Zacatecas-Mexico gold mines? / U.S. Grant / March 11th 1883.'' Letter on Mexican Legation bifolium stationery measures 5'' x 8'' as folded, with Grant's portion written on a space of 4'' x 5''. Separation starting along folds, although Grant's portion has no fold lines. Very good plus condition with bold writing by Grant. Accompanied by original Mexican Legation mailing envelope.
