As Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton signs his full name in black ink to this military document, appointing an unnamed person to the position of ''Captain in the Signal Corps in the service of the United States'' on 13 June 1863. Stanton signs boldly at bottom right, informing the letter receiver to report to Captain Samuel B. Norton. Document is written on War Department stationery. Comes with 2 letters by Samuel B. Norton, dated 23 June 1863. Single page card-style document by Stanton measures 8'' x 10''. Tears starting along folds, chipping and light toning, overall very good condition.
