Scarce 1876 campaign button, a ferrotype image of Democratic Presidential candidate Samuel Tilden. In the most disputed election in Presidential history (topping 2000 and 2016), Tilden won the popular vote but trailed in the Electoral College by 19 votes, with 20 votes disputed as a result of improper vote tallying. In perhaps the most audacious compromise the country had yet seen, the Democratic party agreed not to contest the election of Rutherford B. Hayes, in exchange for the withdrawal of federal troops from South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana. The resulting Compromise of 1877 effectively ended Reconstruction in the South, and blunted a revolt by Democrats who believed that the election had been stolen from them. Ferrotype image measures .5'' x .75'', held in the button measuring 1'' x 1.25''. Some tarnishing to metal and minor spotting to emulsion, overall very good condition.
