Salmon P. Chase autograph letter signed, dated 31 May 1861 shortly after Chase was tapped as Treasury Secretary during the Civil War. Chase writes to ''My dear General'', introducing his friend Edward Jordan, who Chase had just appointed Solicitor of the Treasury. He writes, ''The Solicitor of the Treasury Mr. Jordan wishes to see you on the matter of business. Permit me to introduce him to your friendly consideration...S.P. Chase''. At the conclusion of the letter, Chase writes ''Adj. Gen. Thomas'', referring to Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas. Single page letter measures 5.125'' x 8.125'' on bifolium stationery. Light wear and smudging, overall in very good condition.
