Rutherford B. Hayes autograph letter signed dated 16 July 1883 to Edward Bok reads '...the Trustees of the Slater Fund have reached one conclusion which I deem vital, viz: that the schools to be encouraged should be prepared to instruct pupils in mechanical employments -- should teach not only what is found in books, but also the arts by which to make a living. The failure to do the latter is a capitol defect in our public school systems...R.B. Hayes''. 2pp. card style stationery measures 7.25'' x 8.5'' and is in near fine condition.
