Robert Morris signed stock certificate for ten shares in the North American Land Company, the speculative venture that put Morris, DOI signer and financier of the Revolutionary War, into debtor's prison. Boldly signed by Morris as President of the company, and countersigned by James Marshall as Secretary. Document is dated 14 September 1795 with stock issued to Birds, Savage & Bird of London, a financial firm that Marshall, Morris's son-in-law and brother of Chief Justice John Marshall, undoubtedly targeted to raise money for the failing venture. Stock certificate number 2020 measures 12.5'' x 9.5'' with scalloped left edge. With pen cancel through Morris's signature. Light chipping to edges, overall very good plus condition.
