Rene Gagnon autograph letter signed. Gagnon was pictured in Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph, ''Raising The Flag on Iwo Jima''. From boot camp on Parris Island, South Carolina he writes to his sweetheart Pauline Harnois in their hometown of Hooksett, New Hampshire. Upon U.S. Marines stationery, letter dated 8 June 1943 reads in part, ''...we are going down for injections today...Don't tell my mother but I got clipped under the eye with a bayonet its nothing much so don't worry, it won't even show when I get home. I also clipped the end of my finger but its all grown back in. It really a lot of fun this bayonet training but I'm getting tired of it...Rene...send cookies...'' Letter in pencil is accompanied by the original envelope made out in Gagnon's hand in ink, including his name and return address. Runs 2pp. on a single sheet of Marine Corps stationery, measuring 7'' x 10.5''. Toning, creasing and ink marks to the right margin of the first page, else near fine.
