Rare document signed by Mary Surratt, considered either ''mother'' to the Abraham Lincoln conspirators, who hatched the plot to assassinate the President at her boarding house, or an innocent female victim of prosecutorial overreach; either way, Surratt was the first woman executed by the federal government. Document is datelined from Surrattsville, Maryland on 15 November 1864, during the time she moved from Surrattsville to the boarding house in Washington, DC. Indeed, document seems to be an invoice for agricultural tools no longer needed and sold by Surratt, as administratrix of her deceased husband's estate, including a harrow, a set of swingletrees, and a crowbar. Signed by Surratt ''Recved payment / M. E. Surratt'' at lower right. Document measures 7.5'' x 8.25'', with most of lower side missing. Some splitting along folds, with repair to some folds on verso, and light foxing. Otherwise in very good condition with clear signature by Surratt.
