Piece of the LZ 129 Hindenburg, the tragic airship that ignited and crashed during its attempt to dock on 6 May 1937, commonly known as the Hindenburg disaster which killed 36 people and effectively ended the airship era. Piece is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from American Zeppelin Transport, Inc., the American agent of German company Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei which operated the Hindenburg. Dated 24 May 1937, less than three weeks after the disaster, letter on the company's embossed stationery reads in part, ''This is to certify that the attached piece of fabric was taken from the wreck of the German Airship 'Hindenburg' after she was destroyed by fire over the U.S. Naval Air Station at Lakehurst N.J. on May 6th 1937.'' Metallic silver piece, with singing along back top edge, measures approximately 4'' x 1.5'', affixed to the letter with original staple. Letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Folds to letter, and light toning, in very good condition.
