Academy Award presented to Richard Day for Best Art Direction at the 15th Academy Awards. Statue was won by Day jointly with Joseph C. Wright and Thomas Little for their work on ''This Above All'', released in 1942. The war-themed romance was adapted for the screen from a novel by Eric Knight, the same author who created Hollywood gem ''Lassie''. Anatole Litvak directed Tyrone Power as Clive Briggs, a soldier stationed in England who goes AWOL and falls in love with Prudence Cathaway, a British socialite played by Joan Fontaine. Thomas Mitchell, Nigel Bruce and Gladys Cooper also starred. This is the only Oscar the film won of its four nominations. Richard Day himself was nominated an astounding 20 times over the course of his illustrious career. This is the fourth in Day's roster of seven Oscars, awarded for his work on such distinguished classics as ''How Green Was My Valley'', ''A Streetcar Named Desire'' and ''On The Waterfront''. Iconic figure is a knight posed perfectly symmetrically with a crusader's sword, standing on a film reel, the five spokes of which represent actors, writers, directors, producers and technicians. Gold-plated brittanium statue sits atop a black lacquered metal base bearing plaques labeling the award. Underside of the base is lined in brown felt. Weighs 6 pounds, 7 ounces. Figure is lightly tarnished with some rubbing to the finish, and the bottom edge of the base shows chipping to the finish and a few nicks, else near fine.
