Legion D'Honneur document dated 24 June 1816. The Marshal of Taranto, Etienne MacDonald signs the partially-printed document which requests exact details about the status of a Versailles resident, knight, and Legion corporal named Merlin. The recipient is the representative of the department of the Seine and Oise of Versailles. MacDonald asks for a response and for the correspondence to be kept confidential. Of Napoleon's famously decorated Legion of Honor members, the phrase was born: ''It is with such baubles that men are led''. Single page document on Grand Chancellor stationery measures 8'' x 12''. Very light toning, a few specks of foxing and horizontal crease to center, else near fine.
