Millard Fillmore autograph letter signed regarding the stinging defeat of the Whig party in the 1844 Presidential election. Writing from Albany to an unnamed recipient on 25 January 1845, letter reads in part, ''My Dear Sir, Your letter of the 8th instant addressed to me at Buffalo, has just reached me at this place where I am detained in attendance upon our Supreme Court...I am now exclusively devoted to my profession, trying as much as possible to forget the dreadful defeat of the Whig party, and dreading to look at the future prospects of our country. In my own defeat I have nothing to regret, but I can not think of the injustice done to our great champion, and noble leader, Henry Clay, without a mingled feeling of indignation and pain. I do not suffer myself to dwell upon it. / Truly your friend / Millard Fillmore''. Single page measures 7.875'' x 9.5''. Folds, overall in very good to near fine condition with bold handwriting.
